In Episode Ten of Season Four, Christian Wolmar interviews Thomas Ableman of Freewheeling<\/em>, who has studied how the integrated public transport model developed in Switzerland might be deployed in rural areas of Great Britain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They [the Swiss] do not say that they have transport integration because they are rich; they say they are rich because they have transport integration.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The first thing you should do is to ensure that your people and your politicians understand that this is the<\/em> way to become a very wealthy country.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As someone who doesn’t drive, through choice, it’s one of the only places you can go where as a non-driver you have exactly that same sense of freedom to go anywhere you like, whenever you like, that car drivers in the U.K. are used to everywhere, including rural areas.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is entirely typical. Every single village in Switzerland of 300 people or more has an hourly bus that connects to the local railway station it meets the train at that station perfectly: the bus arrives, the train arrives and you get on the train; and in the other direction, the train arrives, you step outside and the bus is there waiting to take you to the village.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s just this perfect, constant, hourly, seamless connectivity from everywhere to everywhere seven days a week, 18 hours a day. That’s just how it works; for them it is normal.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After hearing how the Swiss model works, it would be hard to say that having a railway in the Teign Valley was a ludicrous idea and that self-centred transport was the only answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Swiss roads are better for cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
