Every single village in Switzerland of 300 people or more has an hourly bus that connects to the local railway station it meets the train at that station perfectly: the bus arrives, the train arrives and you get on the train; and in the other direction, the train arrives, you step outside and the bus is there waiting to take you to the village.”

“There’s just this perfect, constant, hourly, seamless connectivity from everywhere to everywhere seven days a week, 18 hours a day. That’s just how it works; for them it is normal.”

After hearing how the Swiss model works, it would be hard to say that having a railway in the Teign Valley was a ludicrous idea and that self-centred transport was the only answer.

And Swiss roads are better for cyclists.

In Episode Ten of Season Four, Christian Wolmar interviews Thomas Ableman of Freewheeling, who has studied how the integrated public transport model developed in Switzerland might be deployed in rural areas of Great Britain.
