{"id":204,"date":"2020-08-03T12:37:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T11:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teignrail.co.uk\/scouting\/?p=204"},"modified":"2024-10-08T00:40:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-07T23:40:32","slug":"41-north-cornwall-refresher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teignrail.co.uk\/scouting\/41-north-cornwall-refresher\/","title":{"rendered":"41  North Cornwall Refresher"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>When the <em>utilicon <\/em>worked to Holsworthy in November, the opportunity was taken to stop at some places on the Bude Branch (covered in Item 31) and the scout resolved then to return to Halwill Junction in summer for a route refresher.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The station only went by the name Halwill Junction for a while. It began as Halwill and Beaworthy and ended as plain Halwill, although the Railway Clearing House Index to Stations had it as Halwill <em>for<\/em> Beaworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Nevertheless, the settlement that grew around the railway was called Halwill Junction and today its name acts as a memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">All that remains of the station is the end of the light railway&#8217;s bay platform, where passengers joined the train for stations to Torrington. Momentarily thinking he would eat his steak pasty in this seclusion, the scout decided to go back to the village green, which he judged to be a nicer spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-small-font-size\">Only then did he see that the whitewashed edging stones were in fact concrete alignment &#8220;monuments,&#8221; which were once positioned alongside curves, allowing any movement of the track to be corrected. And of course they were used when the track was re-laid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.teignrail.co.uk\/scouting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DSC01001-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264\" width=\"426\" height=\"308\"\/><figcaption>Three or four inches of old fishplate, or other offcut, is embedded in the concrete. When the monument was firmly set in the ground, usually in the cess, a saw cut was made (which can just be seen here) a precise distance from the nearest rail. Asked if he was lodging, he replied that he drove here every day, a round trip of 110 miles or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">What to one man was an expedition, to another is a &#8220;commute.&#8221;
