The original station, closed in 1959, was 66 chains further west.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The new station was supposed to be the beginning of a series which might have included Cullompton, Kingskerswell, Okehampton, Plympton, Brent and Tavistock. The scribe&#8217;s memory is that it was around \u00a3500,000, but that the accursed Railtrack had inflated it to \u00a31-million. But Railtrack only came into existence in April, 1994, by which time the station would have been nearly finished. It may have been that Railtrack would have made sure it cost \u00a31-million if it had been in charge from the start.<br>The Bank of England&#8217;s inflation calculator makes \u00a3380,000 in 1994, \u00a3764,000 today.
