130 Cadeleigh, Cheriton Fitzpaine and Stockleigh Pomeroy

The first “lunchtime 30″—and it was exactly 30 miles—in what seemed like ages took the scout up the Exe Valley and over Raddon Top.

Traffic seemed unusually light on the Exe Valley road. Were motorists bracing themselves for fuel price shocks?

He noticed as he passed that the gate to Burn Halt had been cleared so he went back to take advantage of it.

It is a long climb from the valley to Cadeleigh, the village which gave its name to the station’ It would have been Bickleigh but for there already being one between Plymouth and Tavistock.

The sun came out in time for the scout’s lunch at Church Cross in Cheriton Fitzpaine. The church is St. Matthew’s. He remembered that there was tut-tutting in the community shop the last time he was here because he chose not to wear a face nappy.

The scout crossed the Crediton to Bickleigh turnpike and rode through Stockleigh Pomeroy, on the old road. From there, it was not a long climb to Raddon Top where the scout took in the hazy views before continuing through Shute and Langford to the Barnstaple road.
