Combe Hay Locks

The Somersetshire Coal Canal gained, or lost, all its height difference – 134 feet – in a single flight of 22 locks.

The scene in “The Titfield Thunderbolt” in which Pearce & Crump’s competing bus nearly collides with a car was filmed where the canal was built over by the Camerton Branch. One of the locks was lost beneath the railway bridge.

Passing beneath the former branch in September, 2014, the scout was delighted to find that some of the locks had been cleared and he tried to imagine how magnificent this flight must have been when it was in operation.
