Slippery Surface

The scout had an extremely uncomfortable encounter with a concrete ford on a bridleway in 2021 which rendered him out of action for a fortnight.

A month after kissing the concrete of this ford on Rydon Lane, Woodbury, the scout returned to see what had done for him. He had gone in the opposite direction numerous times and he remembered straightening his course as he came off the curve going this way, but the bike went from under him like he’d been on ice. A small sign was found partly hidden in the hedge at left and placed where the scout hoped others would take heed of it.

The scout wrote to the parish council after his spill, only to report the incident, not to apportion blame. He felt sure that he was not the only one to have been injured here. He advised that he had retrieved the scrawled sign from the hedge and placed it where it could be seen.

Early in 2025, he was pleased to find that the parish had put up proper signs for the benefit of cyclists. He wrote to thank the secretary. No replies were received.
